Pro-freedom protesters Friday took policemen in civvies as militants and saluted them when they fired several shots in air to apprehend the Syed Ali Geelani led Tehreek-e-Hurriyat (TeH) district president Anantnag, Mir Hafizullah who was leading a procession in South Kashmir. We were quite surprised when men in plain clothes fired in air and caught hold of Mir Hafizullah when the procession was on way to Hakoora Jamia Masjid from Muslim Abad area of Achabal in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district. Protesters took policemen as militants and when they appeared in front of the procession and fired in air, people saluted them and raised high-pitched pro-freedom slogans. But, things changed shortly after the policemen in civvies caught hold of Mir Hafizullah and bundled him into a Taveera. People resorted to stone-pelting and even attacked the Taveera, however, policemen fired tear-smoke and PAVA shells to keep protesters at bay,” eyewitnesses told news agency CNS.A resident of Akingam Achabal, Mir Hafizullah was evading arrest from past four months while police had so far failed to nab him despite repeated raids at his residential house. Mir was evading arrest and was declared a proclaimed offender by police. He is accused of leading and organizing scores of pro-freedom and anti-India protests in Anantnag district.“He is involved in all but 25 cases. He is likely to be booked under Public Safety Act,” said a police official. (CNS)
