Inhabitants of several down town areas on Friday took to streets against Power Development Department (PDD) for ‘failing to provide them adequate electricity’ from past two weeks. The protesting inhabitants also locked down the receiving station Safa Kadal. As soon as the mandatory Friday prayers ended in the local Masjids, the residents of scores of downtown areas including Ganderpora, Saki Dafar, Eidgah, Zaadi Masjid, Nowpora, Noorbagh, Bunger Mohalla, Narwara, Shaheed Mazar Eidgah colony, Rathpora and others assembled outside the receiving station Safa Kadal. They were chanting slogans against the department and were demanding adequate electricity in their area.Local sources said that the receiving station was also locked down by the protesting residents. They informed KNS that the announcements were made on Masjid loudspeaker’s asking the residents to come on roads against the failures of PDD.

“PDD department has failed to provide us adequate electricity from past more than two weeks. We are not getting sufficient electricity,” protesters said. They said that the authorities in the department are ignoring their plights and leaving thousands of families here to suffer. “We showed consistency in the uprising, which is the only reason behind unscheduled power cuts in our areas. We are being forced to face hardships. We believe that it is the new tactic of government to suppress the voices of people,” they said. The protesting residents demanded adequate electricity in their area.Admitting that facts that the receiving station at Safa Kadal has been locked down by the protesting residents, Chief Engineer PDD, Shahanz Goni told KNS that the unscheduled power cuts occur due to the overload in Srinagar. However, she said that “We will look into the matter and will hopefully redress the genuine grievances of the people.” (KNS)
