Day 118: SP College attacked with petrol bomb, another school set on fire in Naidkhai; shutdown continues in Valley

A complete shutdown was observed across Kashmir on day 118th of the ongoing uprising while prestigious SP College here in summer capital was attacked with a petrol bomb and another school was set ablaze at Naidkhai area of Bandipora district.According to GNS correspondent, in Old City, hundreds of forces men were deployed in five police station areas of Srinagar’s Old City – MR Gunj, Nowhatta, Safa Kadal, Rainwari and Khanyar – since early morning. There was however civilian movement without any disruption in all these areas. In Civil Lines and uptown area of the Srinagar, the routine movement of private transport and pedestrians was once again seen since early morning but all the shops, commercial establishments and educational institutes were closed.At Anchar Soura, Safa Kadal and Eidgah, strict restrictions were imposed by forces in the wake of Wednesday’s violence. Meanwhile, unidentified persons attempted to set prestigious SP College in Srinagar on fire by hurling a petrol bomb towards the institute. Police said that the attack resulted in partial damage to some windowpanes and it was brought under control immediately. 

The police have registered a case and the investigation has been started.Official sources said that unidentified persons set on fire Government Middle School Astanpora in Naidkhai area of Bandipora district in north Kashmir. The school suffered partial damage in the blaze incident as fire tenders rushed to the spot immediately. This is the 28th school to be set on fire in Valley since September. Reports of shutdown were also received from all other districts of the Valley. Clashes were reported from Sabzi Mandi Soura in Srinagar and Bandipora between youths and government forces. Police fired several teargas canisters towards protesters and the situation was brought under control, official sources added.Detailing the situation, a police spokesman said: “the overall situation across the valley remained largely under control and peaceful. No untoward incident was reported from any party of the valley till filing of this report.  The day witnessed normal movement of people and vehicular traffic on the city roads as well as in other main towns of the valley. Vendors in large number were seen on the streets of the city as also in the main towns of the valley with a huge number of shoppers busy in shopping at these places. “The workers of Peace Movement Party protested at press enclave Srinagar and were demanding the opening of the school in the valley. As a precautionary measure necessary deployment was made on some vulnerable points of the city as well as in other main towns to thwart away any untoward incident hampering normal life and disrupting the smooth flow of traffic.” (GNS)
