The Punjab Government would provide about 25000 Economically Weaker Sections/ Lower Income Group (EWS/LIG) Flats in the state at a cost of Rs.4 lakhs and Rs.6 lakh respectively under Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojna in a phased manner. This was disclosed here today by the Chief Secretary Punjab Mr. Sarvesh Kaushal, while presiding over the State Level Bankers Committee Meeting.Addressing the Executives of different banks, representatives of various financial institutions and senior officers of the departments of Housing, Finance, Local Government and PUDA, Mr. Kaushal has asked all the banks and financial institutions to voluntarily participate and raise the loan facilities for the beneficiaries. The Primary Lending Institutions (PLI) have also been asked to collaborate in the implementation of the scheme. The maximum loan amount eligible for interest subvention at the rate of 6.5% on the loan availed from Primary Lending Institutions for EWS and LIG category would be Rs. 6.00 lac.

It was also mentioned in the meeting that the land for the construction of these flats is already in the possession of the Department of Housing/ PUDA. The Dwelling Units have been planned to be constructed in a Ground plus three storey structures. Probable sites where the DUs have been proposed to be constructed have been identified. PUDA has been designated as the Nodal Agency for implementation of this scheme launched by the Prime Minister in June 2015.Giving his presentation, Mr. Manvesh Sidhu, Chief Administrator PUDA said that PUDA has got a digital record of all the 41,119 applications received for 17 towns of the state out of which 12000 have to be selected in the first phase. PUDA visualized that the construction of the DUs would take 18 months from the date of allotment of tenders till giving possession. Those beneficiaries who would be provided with the Dwelling Units in the first phase shall have to deposit an earnest money of Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 25,000 for EWS and LIG DUs respectively with PUDA. This would only be used to pay for the default, if any, on the part of the beneficiary in the fulfilment of Pre-EMI interest during the construction period. He also said that the digital data would be provided to all those PLIs who sign a MOU with PUDA to implement the scheme in a time bound manner in Punjab. Prominent amongst others who were present in the meeting included Additional Chief Secretary Local Government, Mr. Satish Chandra and Principal Secretary Housing, Mr. Vishwajeet Khanna besides representatives of various banks, financial institutions and Gramin Banks in Punjab.
