JK's first IPS officer and former DGP T R Kalra passed away this morning.An officer of the 1962 batch of the J&K cadre, Kalra during the course of his meritorious career held many important positions.Starting his career as ASP Jammu, Kalra later held positions of ASP Srinagar, District Police Chief of Rajouri, Poonch, Jammu, AIG Headquarters and Principal Police Training School Udhampur.While on deputation in the Centre Kalra served in the Bureau of Police Research ( BPRND) and Center Bureau of Investigation (CBI).He also worked on the important desk of Director internal security in the Ministry of Home Affairs, New Delhi.On his repatriation to the state he served as Commandant of Batallion of the Armed Police and later officiated ad DIG Kashmir Zone before being posted as DIG of Police Jammu province.He was the founder director of the Police Training College Udhampur where he later laid the foundation of the Sher E Kashmir Police Training Academy.
T.R Kalra also served as IGP Prisons, Transport Commissioner and Headquarters and was promoted as Director General of Police during the peak of militancy in the year 1991.Kalra was credited with heading a Traffic Task Force that proposed a bypass road for Jammu. He was instrumental in drafting the new Arms Act of Union of India.He was an admirer of literature and had deep interest in Urdu poetry and history.Shri Kalra a double M.A in History and Economic also held mastery on the history of North-West frontier of India and had published many papers on the subject.Shri Kalra was also a National Level Volleyball player and also remained President of the J&K Olympic Association and the J&K Swimming Association.He is survived by his wife Smt Veena Kalra and sons Ranjeet and Iqbal Kalra.His cremation shall take place today at 4.30 pm at Channi Himmat Cremation Ground.
