The Punjab Lecturers Union demanded increase in promotion quota in proportion to the existing sanctioned strength of posts – 18000 as Lecturer, 3500 as Vocational Masters and 500 Headmasters. While the existing promotion quota is fixed as 55 per cent for lecturers, 15 per cent for vocational and 30 per cent for headmasters, the Union members –  Sudarshan Jagga, Dr Harbhajan, Vijay Garg, Shivraj Gill, Ram Pratap from Malout  said that a resolution to this effect was passed a few years ago to increase the quota for promotion of lecturer to school principal. In the resolution, the new promotion quota was decided as 75 per cent for lecturer, 15 per cent vocational masters and 10 per cent for headmasters which should be implemented at the earliest. They further said that 349 High Schools recently upgraded as Senior Secondary Schools are headless and lecturers have also not been posted for the additional classes of Plus One and Plus Two in the upgraded schools.Since the new academic session has started, the education department, without any loss of time, fill up the vacant posts immediately so that the studies of the students are not affected, added the Union leaders.Added here, on up-gradation of the High Schools, the Headmasters/Headmistress already posted were immediately shifted to other High Schools without posting the Principals in the upgraded Senior Secondary Schools.
