Day 22: Amid curfew and shutdown, protests continue in Kashmir Valley

As the shutdown and curfew after killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani entered 22nd day, the protests and clashes continued in several areas of Kashmir Valley during which forces open fire at Shopian, leaving three including a woman injured.A strict curfew was imposed in Old City, Maisuma and Batamaloo areas of city here to thwart possible protests while rest of the city observed a complete shutdown. Reports said that though the situation remained peaceful across the Srinagar but clashes erupted between youths and retreating government forces men in the evening.The major parts of south Kashmir also remained under curfew and shutdown today but there was no major incident of violence so far. However, forces opened fire on protesters at Imam Sahab Shopian in which three persons including a woman were injured. All the injured have been referred to Srinagar.

Reports said that protests erupted in Tral, parts of Pulwama, Kulgam, Anantnag, Kupwara and Baramulla. At Sopore, ten persons sustained injuries during clashes with government forces. Media reports said that the cavalcade of Education Minister Nayeem Akhtar was stoned by protesters at Sumbal in Bandipora district but he escaped unhurt. All kinds of commercial and educational activities including commercial remained halted in all districts of the Valley. A police official said the overall situation across Valley remained peaceful.(GNS)
