Expert doctors from Mumbai conduct surgeries on pellet injured at SMHS

'Critically injured will be shifted to New Delhi'

Two expert doctors from Mumbai Tuesday conducted surgeries of patients who have been critically injured by pellets fired by forces in the ongoing unrest in the Valley.Doctors in the SMHS hospital told KNS that the two expert doctors conducted surgeries on few pellet injured victims in the operation theatre of Ophthalmology department.“The doctors conducted few surgeries today, and they will be performing more. They will also assist our Ophthalmologist also,” doctors in the Ophthalmology department told KNS.The two member team is led by Dr S Nataranjan, Director Aditya Jyoti, Mumbai.“They will conduct four surgeries on the pellet injured. They started at 1.30 pm,” doctors said.At least 183 patients were admitted in Ophthalmology department during the two weeks of unrest, among which 148 have been operated as first part of the surgery.Doctors said that 23 critically injured have been identified who need serious medical intervention for treating their injured eyes.

“20 victims have injuries in both eyes, while in 10 patients one eye has been eviscerated (removed). Three patients are totally blinded after the pellet injury,” doctors told KNS.“More pellet injured victims who need critical care will be sent to AIIMS for treatment,” the doctors said.Four eye injured patients have already been flown by the government to AIIMS few days ago for specialised treatment. And one patient has gone to AIIMS on his family expenditure.Meanwhile, nine fresh youth with pellet injuries were treated in the hospital today after clashes in old city areas in Srinagar. “They have pellet injuries in body, some have ocular injuries.Earlier, a three- member team of eye-specialists from All India Institute of Medical Sciences New Delhi had visited Kashmir to assist the State Government in treating people injured due to pellets.Headed by ophthalmologist Prof Sudarshan K Kumar, the team has examined 60 patients with injuries in retina.
