Governor participates in cleanliness campaign

Governor Acharya Devvrat today participated in the Cleanliness Campaign organized by Shimla Amateur Garden & Environment Society (SAGES) under 'Swachta Abhiyan' at Chaura Maidan, Shimla. He himself took a broom and cleaned the area near Indian Institute of Advanced Study along with the Raj Bhawan staff.While launching the ‘Swachta Abhiyan’, the Governor said, ''Global warming is posing a serious challenge and effective steps should be taken to protect the precious environment which sustains human life. '' He said that man was dependent upon nature for every need and every citizen should contribute towards this important cause. He said that initiatives should be taken at community and individual level to save the earth and ecology and added that mass awareness programmes should be launched at mass level to involve every citizen in this noble cause.

Acharya Devvrat said that Himachal was known for its salubrious climate and pristine beauty and it was essential to preserve the beauty of the hill state, which was only possible if all sections of society were involved. He said lakhs of tourists visits Himachal Pradesh every year and to promote tourism, towns and cities should be kept clean. He appealed the youth to become a part of this campaign.He said that every citizen should be aware about his duty to keep the surroundings clean and stressed that cleanliness campaigns should be undertaken aggressively in educational institutions. He said that being a tourist state it was extremely necessary to maintain proper cleanliness and hygienic conditions in the cities and town so that the state could build a good image among the tourists.The Governor appreciated the initiatives of SAGES to keep Shimla clean and emphasized that such activities should be organized in regular intervals to make this beautiful city clean and healthy.Dr. B.K Karkara, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Shimla Shri Pankaj Rai and other members of SAGES were also present on the occasion.
