To commemorate the International Women’s Day, the J&K State Women’s Development Corporation (JKSWDC) in collaboration with the Government Women’s College Parade, today organized an impressive function in the College auditorium.Advisor to Governor Khurshid Ahmed Ganai was the chief guest, while Secretary Social Welfare Department, Sanjiv Verma was guest of honour on the occasion.Director Social Welfare, Veerji Hangloo, Managing Director, JKSWDC, Ms. Nahid Soz, Managing Director J&K SC/ST Corporation, Y.P. Suman, Principal GWC Parade, Prof. Renu Goswami and large number of women entrepreneurs, members of various Self Help Groups (SHGs) sponsored by JKSWDC from across the State, faculty members and college students were present on the occasion.
The JKSWDC also organized a 2-day exhibition-cum-sale of goods produced by the SHGs in the college premises, which was inspected by the Advisor, who appreciated the efforts of the Corporation in helping the women entrepreneurs.Highlighting the importance of the day, Mr. Khurshid Ahmed Ganai said that entire world celebrates this day with lot of enthusiasm to highlight the endeavors and achievements of the women in different spheres of life which give them courage and freedom to perform much better in life. He said women are not less than their male counterparts and are doing excellent job in every sector and equally partner in the growth and prosperity of the society and nation. He said there is constant debate across the world on the issue of gender equality and women’s rights which need to be dealt with sincerity and collective efforts so that they feel secured and independent in the society.
The Advisor called for re-affirming the pledge to change the mind-set of people towards gender discrimination to create a free and fair atmosphere for the women folk so that the social evils in the society are countered appropriately and eradicated. He also highlighted the initiatives of the Central and State Governments for the promotion and welfare of women folk. The initiatives like Beti Bachao - Beti Padao, Laadli Beti, SMAS, Hunar and others which are aimed at to promote the girls and improving the female sex ratio in the State. He asked the Social Welfare Department to properly highlight the ingredients of these welfare schemes so that the women can avail their benefits.
Ms. Nahid Soz in her welcome address highlighted the achievements of the Women Development Corporation and initiatives taken for the empowerment of the women folk. She said till date the Corporation has disbursed over Rs. 128 crore to the women entrepreneurs for setting up their livelihood units in different business activities. She further revealed that over 5000 beneficiaries have been imparted training in different job oriented courses by the Organization across the State.The Advisor also distributed prizes amongst the members of SHGs who excelled in entrepreneurs activities. He also released broachers on the achievements of the corporation.The artists of Information Department, students of GWC Parade and beneficiaries associated with SHGs presented a colourful bonanza of cultural items based on social evils that enthralled the audience.
Later, the Adviser participated in a Golden Jubilee function organized by the Dogra Educational Trust at Bari Brahamna as chief guest, which was also coincided with the International Women’s Day. In his address he appreciated the Dogra Education Trust for excelling in the field of education and serving to the humanity for the past five decades. He lauded the personal efforts and immense contribution of the Chairman Dogra Education Trust, Th. Gulchain Singh Charak for spreading and imparting the quality education in the State and producing excellent products which are bringing laurel in different fields in the country. He hoped that the society will continue to contribute to enrich the society in the education field.The Advisor also honoured the meritorious students of different faculties.On the occasion, the chief Guest also inaugurated the Chairman’s Gallery in the College showcasing the background of the 50 years journey of the Educational Trust.Th. Gulchain Singh Charak in his presidential remarks highlighted the achievements and further initiatives of the Dogra Educational Trust.
