The first gold medal to be won in the 3rd Arab Women Sports Tournament (AWST 2016) has been bagged by Nadia Taryam, the Sharjah Ladies Club (SLC) equestrian player yesterday (02/02) in the first half of the show jumping competition. The event was held at the Sharjah Equestrian and Racing Club, with Taryam’s winning height of 1 - 1.10 m claiming the prize of AED 75,000.Taryam, on her horse, Klado, took the gold with her performance that had no errors and came in at 38.5 seconds, with only a second between her and Egyptian,Amina Ahmed from the Gezira club, on her horse, Quarter3 who took second place. The third place was taken by Saudi Arabian rider, DalmaRoshdy on her horse Ferany, who finished in 40:65 seconds.Mohamed Al Nakhby, member of the Equestrian Technical Committee, praised the gold medal winning performance of Nadia Taryam in show jumping, and said that the win reflected the development of Arab women in show jumping as the difference between the first three places was less than two seconds.
The show jumping competition had the participation of 27 riders from eight countries including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Palestine, Qatar, Kuwait and Algeria. It is the first time it has featured in AWST alongside the seven other sports of volleyball, basketball, fencing, archery, table tennis, shooting and athletics.Today (03/02) in the Radisson Blu Hotel in Sharjah, there will be a draw ceremony for the basketball competitions, to be held on Sharjah Ladies Club courts from 4-12 February.
Arab Women Sports Tournament:
AWST is hosted by Sharjah every two years under the patronage of Her Highness SheikhaJawaherbint Mohammed Al Qasimi. Following the success of Gulf Countries Competition (GCC), a sports competition organised by the Sharjah Ladies Club, Her Highness SheikhaJawaher Al Qasimi established the Women Sports Department in 2008 and opened the GCC to all Arab countries in order to raise the profile of women's sports in the region. The tournament is the first of its kind in the Arab World and was launched in 2012. Contestants participate in eight games including basketball, volleyball, table tennis, fencing, archery, shooting, athletics and show jumping.
