Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken on Tuesday urged the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to take steps to rectify the problem of call drops in the city as soon as possible. He met TRAI chairman R.S. Sharma over the issue of alarming number of call drops in Delhi."TRAI should act as a strong watch dog and impose heavy penalties on private companies, as it is the duty of the TRAI and the government to ensure that there are no call drops. Telecom companies should be asked to switch over to the latest technology," Maken demanded.

He said that as per TRAI, call drops had jumped two-fold on 2G networks and by 65 percent on 3G networks in the first quarter of 2015, as compared to the first quarter of 2014."National Capital was severely hit due to the disturbance in the communication network, as there were call drops in nine out of ten calls.""As per TRAI norms, the call drop rate of any service provider should not exceed two percent according to the audit report findings of TRAI on July 21, 2015, and in Delhi dropped calls were as high as 17 percent," he added.
