Eminent journalist Shaukat Mahmood arrested in Bangladesh

Noted journalist Shaukat Mahmood, president, Federal Union of Journalists, the largest organization of journalists of Bangladesh, was arrested by the police at around 11:15 am Bangladesh time on Tuesday.Earlier, on Sunday, the Detective Branch of police arrested noted journalist Probir Shikder from his residence in the capital city Dhaka. He was picked for his Facebook post in which he blamed a minister of the country for making his life unsecured.

Noted journalists – Mahmudur Rahman, Abdus Salam and Kanak Sarwar were sent to jail by the Awami League government, too.

 Shaukat Mahmood who is former president of National Press Club, Bangladesh was picked up by the police from in front of Samurai Community Centre in Dhaka’s Panthapath.Quoting Mashrukur Rahman Khaled, deputy commissioner of the Detective Branch (south) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, online news portal thereport24.com reported that Shawkat was arrested in a case that had been lodged with Jatrabari Police Station.Noor Islam, president, Journalists Union of Jessore and secretary M Ayub condemned the arrests of the two journalists. ‘We demand unconditional release of the journalists’, the said in a statement.
