Clean environment and sustainable development - need of the hour

‘My Village My World Mission’ - a step in this direction: DDC Kulgam

Kick starting the “Green Clean Mission - My Village My World” campaign at Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Katrusoo, Kulgam, the District Development Commissioner, Kulgam Mr. R.K Bhat, while addressing the public gathering stressed on the need to inculcate the good habits of the cleanliness and sanitation. The programme was organized by the Rural Development Department in collaboration with the other departments, Government Degree College and Municipality.The programme was attended by the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Additional District Development Commissioner, District Panchayat Officer, Assistant Development Commissioner, Principal, GHHS (Girls), Katrusoo, Block Development Officer, Civil Society, mass media, PRI members and other distinguished members of the society.

Highlighting the importance of the sanitation, DDC informed that our way of life has a direct bearing on the environment in which we live. For this, he exhorted upon the youth, civil society and the general public to think globally and act locally and that our small, but significant attempts shall, in the long term, help in mitigating the adverse impacts of the environment.

He apprised that the My Village, My World is the second initiative on this front, the first being the Swachh Vidyalaya Mission, and the main focus of this drive is to make J&K State polythene free, preserving and conserve water resources and environment and planned development of the villages. With respect to making the State polythene -free, he revealed that the government of J&K has already banned the use of the polythene in the state and that it is time for us to implement it at the ground level. He emphasized that the public should discontinue the use of the polythene bags as they are non-biodegradable and injurious to health.

He further added that he has already directed the Rural Development authorities to put in place plastic collection centres. Besides, open pits for garbage dumping at village level would also be put in place so that the wastes/garbage is not dumped in water bodies. To prevent open defecation, the Rural Development Department is implementing Swachh Bharat Mission for which an assistance of Rs. 12,000 is being provided for construction of individual sanitary toilet facilities. Besides, District Panchayat Officer, Kulgam, Principal, GHHS (Girls), Katrusoo and others also spoke on the occasion.
