Intensive Course on “Quality Assessment of Drugs and Pharmaceuticals for Export” begins at NIPER

A two weeks workshop on “Advanced Analytical Techniques: Basic Principals & Application for Quality Assessment of Drugs and Pharmaceuticals for Export” organized by NIPER, S.A.S. Nagar was inaugurated by Prof.K.K.Bhutani, Director of the Institute. Around 16 participants from 10 countries viz. BHUTAN, BRAZIL, IVORY COAST, LIBYA, MONGOLIA, MYANMAR, NIGERIA, PHILLIPINES, TUNISIA and UGANDA are participating in the two week course.Director In his welcome address informed participants that ITEC course is organized every year by NIPER for regulatory and other personnel, associated with Pharmaceutical Sector of the developing world. He further added that Pharmaceutical Industry has taken a leadership role in India for producing and exporting medical care products. India has made great progress in producing generics products in last few decades and is perhaps producing the best quality medicines at low price to serve the humanity. Many cera and Bio pharmaceuticals are made in India. Current growth rate of Bio-Pharma and generics in India is 17% and 10% respectively. 

Director further added that cost and quality are the key factors for any medicine, alongwith affordable prices in all countries, including developed countries. Quality is the the main issue for making any drug and this course (ITEC) is mainly designed to cater to requirements of participants by disseminating latest knowledge on quality; analysis, analytical teachings. The course is going to help participants in making their expertise in quality issues, a habit. NIPER is serving Indian Pharmaceutical Industry through its projects with the assistance of in-house Small and Medium Pharmaceutical Industry Centre (SMPIC) and even maintaining its quality through analytical support. He advised participants to make maximum use of the state-of –art-facilities of the institute during the workshop.Besides ITEC Course, Director also made participants aware about the admission process of NIPER for pursuing any degree course at Masters’ and Doctoral level. NIPER has 16 specialized disciplines including Formulations, Process Chemistry and many more.  Explaining objectives of the course Dr. Sanjay Jachak, Associate Professor, Department of Natural Products and Academic Course Coordinator informed participants that this workshop would provide an update on theoretical and practical aspects of the key issues related to “Quality” of pharmaceuticals. He further said that course consists of various modules viz. significance and techniques of quality assurance and quality control; fundamental principles of HPLC, LCMS; basic principles of NMR Spectroscopy etc. and also hands-on-training related to these issues. 

Wing Cdr. P.J.P. Singh Waraich (Retd.), Registrar and Administrative Course Coordinator of the course welcomed delegates and instructed participants regarding do’s and don’ts during their stay in NIPER, campus. He also proposed vote of thanks.Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation popularly known as ‘ITEC” was launched in 1964 as a bilateral programme of assistance of the government of India. Under it and its corollary SCAAP, countries in Asia, Africa, East Europe, Central & Latin America, Pacific and small island countries are invited to share Indian Development experience acquired over five decades of its existence as a free nation. India spends about Rs.500 million annually on ITEC activities. More than 40,000 candidates from across the globe have been trained since its inception.
