Priya Sethi inspects DAV Institute Jawahar Nagar

Calls for immediate steps for its restoration

Minister of State for Education, Information & Culture, Priya Sethi, accompanied MLC Surinder Ambardar, today visited one of Kashmir’s premiere educational institutions ‘DAV Institute’ at Jawahar Nagar and reviewed the post flood situation that rendered the institution dysfunctional.The Minister inspected the entire complex and took stock of the damages caused to the infrastructure due to September 2014 floods. Expressing concern over the non-functioning of the institution after the floods, the Minister issued appropriate instructions to the Director Education and management of the institution to take immediate measures to make this one of the oldest and premier institutions of the Valley functional. She directed for removing the bottlenecks, if any in making the institute functional on priority.Maintaining that it is endeavor of the Government to improve the educational scenario and strengthen the infrastructure in educational institutions across the State, the Minister said that all such institutions which have been rendered defunct due to last year’s floods must be repaired/renovated on priority. She directed the Director School Education Kashmir to personally review the status of all such school buildings which suffered severe damage due to floods and fast-track their repairs.

The Minister was apprised that prior to militancy, the institution was functioning as a College with an approximate enrolment of 6000 students. The enrolment gradually decreased with the passing years due to militancy and lack of attention by the management. The institution converted to Higher Secondary/High School till September floods and could not be restored due to certain reasons.The Members of the management informed that the DAV Institution, Srinagar, which is part of the nation-wide network of institutions was initially set up in a rented accommodation during the year 1963 and later the then Education Minister, late G.M. Sadiq allotted a piece of land for setting up of school on the request of the then Principal late R.K. Ganjoo in the year 1969 at Jawahar Nagar. The institution has rich history and produced many legendary personalities, including Prof. Ashok Aima, Vice Chancellor of Central University, Jammu, Dr. Sameer Koul, Kuldeep Khoda, Vidu Vinod Chopra, Atal Dulloo and many more.Director School Education and functionaries of the Management of Institution also accompanied the Minister.
