Communication system restored in Kashmir

‘All BSNL towers except in Sopore made operational

Police Wednesday said that communication system in Valley especially in badly hit North Kashmir has been restored as all the towers of cellular companies have been made operational.Deputy Inspector General of Police North Kashmir Gareeb Das told CNS that 90 per cent communication system has been restored in Baramulla, Sopore, Uri, Tangmarag, Pattan, Kupwara and other towns. “Almost all the mobile towers in North Kashmir are operational barring few that have developed some technical snag,” he said adding that cellular companies had a detailed meeting with the police administration and after assurances from the police they agreed to restore the communication system.“There will be day and night patrolling in the sensitive areas to ensure smooth functioning of the communication system. We assure the people, particularly those associated directly or indirectly with the business that nobody will be allowed to create hurdles for them,” he said.

Gareeb Das said that police has been investigating the matter and all efforts are on to trace and expose those elements responsible for the attacks on telecom employees and mobile towers.SDPO Pattan Farooq Ahmed told CNS that all the mobile towers have been made operational. “Our police team went from tower to tower to persuade landlords and cellular companies to resume the services. We will ensure peace at any cost in the town,” he said.The defunct mobile towers have also been restored in Tangmarg town.Reports said that the main Airtel tower located near Bus Stand Sopore has developed some technical snag as a result, subscribers have been facing connectivity problem. “Our engineers are on job and it will be made operational after few hours,” said an official.

Meanwhile, Kashmir Valley BSNL Tower Landlords Association said that except Sopore town, it made all the BSNL towers functional all across Kashmir. Association president Shabir Ahmed Lone told CNS that the decision to made towers operational was taken after a meeting with the local police. “Police have in fact offered us security that we put down politely. We will made all the five BSNL towers in Sopore operational provided police assure the landlords there,” he said.In South Kashmir also communication was restored in the areas where breakdown in communication was witnesses from past few days.
