Rajiv Gandhi remembered in Tamil Nadu

The Tamil Nadu unit of the Congress party on Thursday paid tributes here to Rajiv Gandhi, the late party leader and former prime minister.State Congress president E.V.K.S. Elangovan and leaders like M. Krishnaswamy, S. Thirunavukkarasar, legislator Vijayadharani, Jayakumar, Gopanna and others paid floral tributes before a portrait of Rajiv Gandhi at the party headquarters here.The leaders also garlanded Rajiv Gandhi's statue here.At Rajiv Gandhi's memorial in Sriperumbudur, around 50 km from here, party leaders Elangovan, Vijayadharani, former law-maker Yasodha, former union ministers M.V. Muniappa and V. Narayanasamy paid floral tributes to the former prime minister.

Elangovan also received the Rajiv Yatra Torch.According to a party official, life insurance policies for Rs.2 lakh were handed over to over 120 persons at Sriperumbudur and a blood donation camp was also held.Rajiv Gandhi, who was prime minister from 1984 to 1989, was killed in a blast by a woman suicide bomber of the erstwhile Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) from Sri Lanka at an election rally at Sriperumbudur, near Chennai, on May 21, 1991.
