Footwear design institute is key to Make in India: Nirmala Sitharaman

Assuring full support to the Footwear Design and Development Institute's (FDDI) successful skill development programme, Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Wednesday said the institute has a key role in the country's plans to boost manufacturing.“FDDI is key to the success of Make in India and it has achieved remarkable success in skill development," Sitharaman said at the convocation function of the institute here.“FDDI is training about 15,000 people every month. Annually about two lakh people are getting trained here and also getting jobs," she added.

"The commerce and industry minister has sent a few tweet and re-tweet messages in this regard and praised FDDI for targeting to train 1,20,000 fresh and unemployed youths every year with 100 percent placement for all," the institute said in a release. peaking at the occasion, secretary in the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) Amitabh Kant said that skilled manpower was crucial for the country’s economic growth.“We want India to be a major manufacturing hub of the world. Leather footwear sector should play an important role in boosting exports,” he said.
