Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Tuesday commended people of the valley for observing a complete strike to register protest against the policies and approach of the BJP government headed by Narendra Modi, who was on a visit to address an election rally in Srinagar. In a statement to KNS he said, “Brave Kashmiris have once again given a clear message to the Indian leadership and the  international community that the tremendous sacrifices offered and the innumerable  hardships  faced by them for the past more than 65 years, is for the cause of achieving the  basic right, the right to determine their political future.”He regretted that the Indian leadership continue to turn a ‘blind eye’ towards the real issue  and instead of addressing the root cause keep hacking at the leaves, by talking of "development, governance and economic well being" as if that will alter anything.

“Had it been so, for the past sixty years many economic packages and developmental plans have time and again been announced, but that has not in any way changed the fundamental nature of the problem nor has it helped in coming near to a resolution of the issue,” he added.Mirwaiz reiterated that this issue can be solved either by the implementation of the UN resolutions or through a negotiated settlement between the three stakeholders, India, Pakistan and the main party i.e. people of Jammu & Kashmir.Meanwhile, Hurriyat (M) spokesman while strongly condemning the attack on Kashmiris students studying in Haryana, said that it was a cause of concern that the lives as well as  academic future of Kashmiris students studying outside Kashmir was being jeopardized following a well orchestrated conspiracy. He said repeated attacks on Kashmiri students and traders have been reported earlier as well during which many people have lost their lives, but unfortunately nothing has been done so far to stop these attacks. “It is the responsibility of government of India and respective local governments to ensure that Kashmiri students and traders present in their respective states are not harassed and action is taken against those who are involved in these attacks,” he added. The spokesman also appealed people to observe complete strike in those districts who are going to polls on December 9.
