A day after Uri attack, Army chief visits Valley

Says forces are vigilant to counter insurgents,‘Commanders brief him about current security situation in JK’

A day after militants carried out a major fidayeen attack in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district in which eight Army soldiers and three police officials were killed, the Army Chief Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag Saturday visited Srinagar and reviewed the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir. He also paid tributes to the soldiers who lost their lives.The Army sources told KNS that Gen Singharrived in Srinagar at 10.30 AM Saturday and took stock of the current security situation and was also briefed about the yesterday’s militant attack in Murah Uri.Spokesperson of the Chinar Corps told KNS that a solemn wreath laying ceremony was conducted where the Army Chief paid homage to the soldiers who lost their lives in the attack. “The Army Chief saluted the martyrs and laid wreaths for them,” he said and added that after the wreath laying ceremony the bodies of the soldiers were flown to their home towns for the last rites.

He said the Army officials who lost their life was, Lt Col Sankalp Kumar, Hav Subhash Chand, L/Nk Gurnail Singh, Nk Panna Lal Yadav, Gnr Satnam Singh, L/Nk Sukhwinder Singh, DMT Kuldeep Kumar and Gnr Manpreet Singh.Meanwhile sources told KNS that the Army Chief was briefed on the current security situation of Jammu and Kashmir at HQ Chinar Corps by the Northern Army commander and the other commanders.Sources said on the occasion speaking about the two recent operations, Army chief said that this was an attempt by inimical elements to disrupt the remaining phases of the polls as they were unnerved by the high voter turnout in the first two phases. “I must say thanks to the all security forces that prevented militants from reaching the populated areas and stopped harm to innocent lives,” he said and added that I also salute the security forces who ensure the peaceful atmosphere for the polls conducted in the first two phases in Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

According to the sources he also said that the ‘nefarious designs’ of the militants will never be allowed and the forces are alert to counter them. Earlier he was received at Srinagar Airfield by Lt Gen DS Hooda, the Northern Army Commander, and Lt Gen Subrata Saha, the Chinar Corps Commander. The Army Chief was returned to Delhi afternoon.It is pertinent to mention here that after a group of heavily armed militants enter into the Army camp in Mohara Uri on Friday eight Army men, including a senior officer, and three policemen were killed.KNS
