National Conference Friday claimed that BJP had apparently succeeded in convincing the PDP leadership about a possible modification and erosion of J&K’s State Subject Law in successive closed door meetings held between BJP leaders and a PDP Member of Parliament in New Delhi earlier this month.“These meetings between PDP and BJP were arranged by a BJP Spokesman with known close ties to a PDP Member of Parliament and the PDP MP is believed to have gone to the extent of discussing the legal modus operandi of diluting the State Subject Law. PDP has offered its services towards this end in return of the possibility of a post-poll support by the BJP”, NC Spokesman Junaid Azim Mattu claimed in a statement to KNS.

“If rumors are to be believed the PDP MP in question had also allegedly sought a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a request which was eventually turned down because BJP did not want to ruffle feathers of a covert ally that it already has in J&K from North Kashmir. It has become evident that various political entities have been united in their resolve to barter J&K’s political interests for a shot at power in some measure and scale,” he said.

Mattu said that whenever BJP leaders talk about Article 370 they deliberately refer to provisions of the State Subject Law. “So should one infer that BJP wants to dilute the State Subject Law in J&K? If so, there should be no doubt about the fact that National Conference will never allow anyone to inflict any harm on the State Subject Law, the purpose of which is to protect and preserve the demography, political and cultural identity of Jammu and Kashmir”, the NC Spokesman added.

He said that Jammu and Kashmir had suffered far too much in the last three decades to be put through another phase of collective anxiety and apprehension. “Thousands of young boys have died in Kashmir and the political turmoil has inflicted long term psychological costs on our people. Now, rather than trying to find a reconciliatory way forward, BJP wants to instill further anxiety and fear in the people of Jammu and Kashmir by making efforts to abrogate Article 370. For how long will our people have to bear indignation and humiliation for the electoral interests of one party or the other? The people of J&K deserve to look towards the future with peace, confidence and a sense of dignity and National Conference will never give up its stand – rigid or sober – in standing up for what our people deserve,” Mattu added.
