Kiren Rijiju meets Thai Interior Minister in Bangkok

Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju called on the Interior Minister of the Royal Kingdom of Thailand, General Anupong Paochinda in Bangkok today. Congratulating General Anupong Paochinda on his assuming the current charge, Shri Rijiju thanked him for the cooperation of the Thai authorities in apprehending and sending to India, wanted Indian criminals from Thailand. He conveyed that the Government of India was grateful for such excellent cooperation and hoped to further strengthen the ties in future. He also requested General Anupong Paochinda for Thai cooperation in apprehending another wanted criminal of India, Jagtar Singh Tara, who is believed to be in Thailand and mentioned that the Indian Embassy has already provided the relevant information and documents to the Thai authorities. General Anupong Paochinda assured that he would direct the National Security Council of Thailand, which has the responsibility in this area, to take care of the issue. 

Rijiju also informed General Anupong Paochinda that many insurgent groups from India’s North-East which take up arms, have links to the South East Asian countries and tend to go to Myanmar and Thailand. There have been some reports of their presence in Thailand and the Government of India would approach the Thai authorities for assistance in curtailing their activities. General Anupong Paochinda informed that Thai Prime Minister was very clear that no militant activity takes place in Thailand. Rijiju informed that the bilateral relations are proceeding well and India was looking forward to the forthcoming Joint Working Group on Security in Chiangmai on 11-12 December 2014. Both the Prime Ministers have recently met in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar and India was expecting a visit of General Prayuth Chan-O-cha, PM of Thailand to India early next year on the invitation of the Indian Prime Minister. 

The Look East Policy of India has now been transformed into an “Act East Policy” and that complements the “Look West Policy of Thailand”. India looks for close coordination and improving relations with ASEAN and Thailand would be a focus country. He extolled the civilizational and religious links between the two countries and informed that the Government of India would provide all required facilities to the Thai pilgrims visiting the Buddhist circuits in India. He also invited General Anupong Paochinda to visit India, who accepted the invitation. Rijiju is visiting Thailand to attend the Ministerial Conference on Civil Registration and Vital Statistics. Shri Rijiju also met the Minister for Planning of Bangladesh Mr. AHM Mustafa Kamal on the sidelines of the UN-ESCAP sponsored ministerial conference. The Bangladesh Minister sought India’s assistance in setting up power plants in Bangladesh, particularly from Sea Waves and Solar based.
