Sukhbir Proposes Vocational Training Of Jail Inmates In Soft Skills Of New Economy

Jail Department Asked To Evaluate The Proposal Of Multi-Storyed, Modern Jails

The Punjab Deputy Chief Minister  Sukhbir Singh Badal today proposed vocational training of jail inmates and convicts in soft skills of new economy to enable them to find white collared or respectable jobs after completion of their sentence.  In a meeting of jail department held here today  Badal said that it was the duty of the government to ensure that Jail inmates were given such a kind of vocational training that helps them in finding rightful jobs. He said that the old kind of trades, in which jail inmates were being provided training including farming, wood work, mason work were not helpful in the new economy in post-reform era and it was imperative that they were provided training in computers, software development, accountancy package etc that would make them employable in new industry.  Emphasising on improving infrastructure in the jails,  Badal said that Jail Department, while constructing new jails in Amritsar, Ferozepur, Jalandhar and Patiala must focus on improving design and architecture of Jails to give them a modern look. Proposing multi storeyed jails instead of single storeyed,  Badal said that jail department should study the architecture of US and UK Jails and accordingly draw up plans for the convenience of inmates. Prominent amongst those present in the meeting included  S.K. Sandhu, Principal Secretary to CM,  P.S. Aujla, Principal Secretary to Deputy CM,  D.S. Bains, Principal Secretary (Home),  N.S. Kang, Financial Commissioner Revenue, Mrs. Vini Mahajan, Secretary Health,  Anurag Aggarwal, MD PIDB and  Manvesh Singh Sidhu, Special Principal Secretary to Deputy CM.
