Soldier, girl killed in Uri sector by Pak troops; says army

A soldier and a 20-year-old girl were killed after Pakistani troops on Saturday evening allegedly opened fire upon Indian posts along the Line of Control (LoC) with mortar shells at Uri Sector in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.A senior army official told GNS that Pakistani troops, armed with heavy machine guns fired at several Indian posts near Nanak post at Kamalkote and Tika Post in Churanda along the LoC in Uri sector late this evening.He said that fire fight continued for two hours from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.He said some of the shells fired by Pakistani troops also hit the civilian population injuring a girl who later succumbed to wounds in a primary health centre Uri where she was rushed to by the locals.

The girl has been identified as Gulshan Bano (20) daughter of Mohammad Rafiq Bhati of Kamalkote.Soldiers of 11 Madras at Nanak Post and 3/4 GR who guarding the posts near LoC fired back, triggering heavy exchange of fire, the officer said.In the ensuing gunfight a soldier of 11 Madrass also sustained injuries, he said.When reports last came in the intermittent exchange of fire fight was going on in the area.He said that the ceasefire violations were meant to assist infiltration from the Pakistani side."They want to infiltrate as many militants as possible into our side before the snowfall although some snowfall has already occurred along the LOC," the officer said.
