Man on a Mission : Cyclist Who Travelled Across 191 Countries Inspires Barnala's Youth

For most people, a bicycle is simply a means of transport. For Somen Debnath, it has been a passport to the world, a vehicle for change and a lifelong mission to inspire people. The 44-year-old cyclist from Kolkata, who has travelled across 191 countries and all seven continents, arrived in Barnala as part of his latest nationwide expedition under the campaign "Reunion Bharat – One Tree, One Life, Indian Youth and Sports."

His journey aims to spread the message of national unity, environmental conservation, youth empowerment and the importance of sports. Recognising his extraordinary achievement and commitment to social causes, Deputy Commissioner Harpreet Singh IAS honoured Debnath with a Rs. 10,000 cheque and a certificate of appreciation.

Praising his determination, the Deputy Commissioner said such initiatives inspire young people to dream big, serve society and contribute to nation-building. During his stay in Barnala, Debnath interacted with students of Government Senior Secondary School, Sandhu Patti, Government Senior Secondary School (Boys), Thikriwala, School of Eminence, Barnala and Government Senior Secondary School, Dhanaula.

Rather than speaking only about his travels, he encouraged students to plant trees, adopt sports as a way of life and become responsible citizens. His story is one of perseverance. Nearly two decades ago, Debnath began cycling across India to create awareness about HIV/AIDS prevention.

That journey gradually expanded into a remarkable global expedition, taking him through 191 countries across seven continents. Now, after years of travelling the world, he has returned to cycle across every Indian state once again, carrying a renewed message of unity and environmental responsibility.

Debnath entered Punjab through Jammu and Kashmir and is currently travelling across various districts of the state. He also shared his dream of establishing an eco-house in Punjab where cyclists and travellers from around the world could find a welcoming place to stay and exchange ideas. He also met Senior Superintendent of Police Mohammad Sarfaraz Alam, who wished him success for the rest of his journey.
