Serious allegations of mismanagement and corruption have surfaced regarding the wheat procurement process in the grain markets of the Attari constituency. Farmers, commission agents and labourers have complained of severe hardships, alleging that negligence by government agencies and contractors is causing them heavy financial losses.
Taking serious note of the issue, Amritsar MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla visited various mandis to assess the situation and launched a sharp attack on the Punjab Government. On the third day of his mandi visits, MP Aujla inspected grain markets in Basarke Gill, Chicha Bhakna, Hoshiar Nagar, Raja Tal, Attari and Majitha.
During the visit, farmers, commission agents and labourers highlighted issues related to delays, poor arrangements and alleged illegal deductions in wheat procurement. According to the information received, despite transport tenders already being allotted, contractors are failing to provide vehicles on time.
As a result, commission agents are being forced to arrange private trucks and transport vehicles on their own to lift the wheat stock, leading to an additional burden of Rs 20 to Rs 25 per quintal. Pending payments from previous procurement seasons have further increased financial pressure on traders and farmers alike.
People working in the mandis alleged that wheat is being subjected to arbitrary deductions with the alleged connivance of officials and government agencies. Even high-quality produce is reportedly facing cuts of 5 to 10 kilograms per trolley.
Those raising objections are allegedly threatened with rejection or return of their produce, forcing farmers and commission agents to silently bear the losses. Basic facilities in the mandis were also found to be in poor condition.
Farmers and labourers complained about the lack of drinking water, toilets and proper accommodation facilities. Labourers said that work which should normally be completed within 10 days is now stretching for nearly one and a half months, badly affecting their earnings and livelihood.
Reacting strongly to the situation, MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla said the issue is not new but a long-standing failure of the system which has now turned into a “cancer.” He alleged that crores of rupees are being looted in the name of tenders while political and administrative authorities continue to remain silent.
Aujla demanded that the Punjab Government and the Chief Minister order a high-level investigation into the alleged corruption and mismanagement in grain markets across Punjab, including Attari. He said the procurement system must be made completely transparent and accountable to protect the interests of farmers, commission agents and labourers and to restore confidence in the mandi system.
