The Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University, Dr. Karamjeet Singh, has been conferred with the ‘Dr. Mahinder Singh Randhawa Award’, instituted in the memory of Dr. Mahinder Singh Randhawa, in recognition of his significant contribution to the field of higher education. The honour was presented during the 17th International Cultural Festival organised by the Comrade Ujagar Singh Memorial Foundation in the presence of eminent personalities from various walks of life.
The award is given to individuals who have rendered notable services to Punjab and the Punjabi language. The foundation specially appreciated Dr. Karamjeet Singh’s initiatives aimed at expanding access to higher education for students from rural and border areas by increasing university seats and providing additional facilities.
Efforts made under his leadership to take higher education to ordinary households, promote sports and cultural activities, and encourage students from village backgrounds were also highlighted. The award was presented by former Punjab Cabinet Minister S. Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal and noted philanthropist S. S.P. Singh Oberoi.
The honour included a memento, books and a ceremonial shawl. Speaking to mediapersons on the occasion, Dr. Karamjeet Singh observed that traditional folk Festivals — once an integral part of Punjabi culture—are gradually disappearing and being replaced by professionalised events.
He emphasised that such folk gatherings hold an irreplaceable place in Punjabi heritage, serving not merely as entertainment but also as platforms for social awareness and communal harmony. He congratulated the organiser Dilbag Singh and the entire management team, stating that such events help people reconnect with their cultural roots, rekindle patriotic spirit and instil values in the younger generation.
Colourful cultural performances during the fair captivated the audience and offered a vibrant glimpse of Punjab’s rich heritage.
