₹1.80 Crore Drainage Project Launched on Dhuri Bypass to Resolve Waterlogging Issue

OSD Sukhveer Singh Flags Off Development Works from Nanaksar Gurdwara Sahib to Malerkotla Chowk

Providing significant relief to the residents of Dhuri, the Punjab Government today commenced work on a major rainwater drainage project along the Dhuri Bypass to address the recurring issue of waterlogging. The project was inaugurated by OSD to the Chief Minister, Sukhveer Singh.

The initiative involves the construction of an approximately one-kilometre-long drain on both sides of the road, starting from the bypass bridge and extending from Nanaksar Gurdwara Sahib to Malerkotla Chowk. The project, which also includes road repairs and the laying of interlocking tiles, will be executed at an estimated cost of ₹1.80 crore.

Speaking on the occasion, OSD Sukhveer Singh stated that residents of Ward Nos. 18, 19, 20 and 21 had been facing considerable inconvenience during the rainy season due to the accumulation of water on the road stretch. He said that Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann had taken prompt cognizance of the issue and directed the concerned departments to initiate immediate remedial measures, resulting in the launch of this comprehensive infrastructure project.

He further informed that, along with the construction of the drainage system, the road will undergo necessary repairs and block tiles will be laid along the remaining portions to enhance durability and improve the overall appearance of the stretch. Highlighting the importance of the project, the OSD noted that thousands of vehicles pass through the bypass daily. 

During heavy rainfall, water flowing down from the bridge would accumulate on the road, creating traffic hazards and inconvenience for commuters. Upon completion, the drainage system will ensure smooth disposal of rainwater and provide a permanent solution to the problem of water stagnation.

Subsequently, OSD Sukhveer Singh also inaugurated the work for laying interlocking tiles in village Kila Hakiman at a cost of ₹40.24 lakh. He stated that laying five-foot-wide tiles on both sides of the road will strengthen the berms and provide significant convenience and safety to pedestrians and local residents.

Among those present on the occasion were Dr. Anwar Bhasaur, Member, Punjab Waqf Board; Pushpinder Sharma, Chairman, Punjab State Traders Commission, Dhuri; Zila Parishad Member Harjinder Singh Kanjhla; Ramandeep Singh; SDO Navdeep Bansal; and a large number of local residents.
