Member of Parliament (MP) Gurjeet Singh Aujla today strongly condemned the suspension of Harpreet Singh, the Sarpanch of Attari village, and lashed out at corrupt officials. Harpreet Singh is notably the only Sarpanch who, risking his own life, served the troops during 'Operation Sindoor' and was subsequently honored by the Border Security Force (BSF) for his bravery.
Accompanied by the village panchayat, MP Aujla cornered the state government, stating that Harpreet Singh was suspended recently without any valid reason. "On one hand, the Chief Minister talks about democracy, but on the other, an honest and hardworking individual is being penalized," Aujla remarked.
The MP highlighted that Harpreet Singh, Sarpanch of the village belonging to the legendary Sikh warrior Sham Singh Attari, was elected by the people rising above party lines. He noted that the ruling party’s candidate had lost the election in this village. "Harpreet Singh did not just win due to his popularity, but because of his exemplary work, which even sarpanches from neighboring villages come to study," he added.
Aujla further alleged that local MLAs and leaders are mounting pressure on the Sarpanch to join their party, threatening to obstruct his work if he refuses. He claimed that the village has not received a single rupee in grants from the state government, and all development has been funded solely through central grants.
Warning to Officials
Targeting the DDPO (District Development and Panchayat Officer), Aujla questioned how long officials would continue to function under political influence. He emphasized that constitutionally, these positions exist to assist sarpanches, not to create hurdles. He asserted that despite having a clear majority, the Sarpanch was suspended on a "fake case."
"There hasn't been a financial discrepancy of even a single penny. We welcome any inquiry," Aujla challenged. He criticized the administration for ignoring the bravery of border residents who stood by the army during conflict situations to keep the cities safe.
Legal Action Promised
The MP stated that when he personally spoke to the DDPO, he was told the matter would be looked into. However, the department later claimed the Sarpanch failed to receive a notice, despite all resolutions being recorded by the Secretary and the complete record being available.
Aujla declared that he would not back down and intends to make the DDPO, BDPO, and the Secretary parties in a legal suit to be filed in court. He warned officials to remain neutral and stay away from party politics, reminding them that "the law is above all."
Demand to the Chief Minister
Concluding his statement, MP Aujla urged Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter, reinstate the Sarpanch immediately, and ensure that democratic values are not undermined.
