Guru Nanak Dev University Hosts Expert Lecture Series to Commemorate 350th Martyrdom Anniversary of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji

Guru Nanak Dev University, organised a distinguished Expert Lecture Series at Guru Granth Sahib Bhawan to commemorate the 350th Martyrdom Anniversary of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. The event, jointly hosted by the Department of Architecture, Guru Ramdas School of Planning, and the Department of Education, honoured the supreme sacrifice of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji and the legacy of his disciples- Bhai Mati Dass, Bhai Sati Dass, and Bhai Dyal Dass- revered as The Great Redeemers.  

Dr. R.S. Cheema, who greeted the audience and the distinguished guests with grace and reverence. The atmosphere was sanctified with the recitation of the shabad “Deh Shiva Bar Mohe,” invoking divine strength and wisdom. The event was held under the patronage of Prof. (Dr.) Karamjeet Singh, Vice Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University. 

Two distinguished speakers, Dr. Ripu Daman Singh, Head, GZS School of Architecture and Planning, MRSPTU Bathinda ; and Dr. Manmohan Singh IPS (Retd.) , delivered insightful lectures. The event was graced by esteemed university dignitaries including Prof. (Dr.) Karamjeet Singh, honourable Vice Chancellor, along with Prof. (Dr.) Palwinder Singh, Dean Academic Affairs; Prof. (Dr.) K.S. Chahal, Registrar; Prof. (Dr.) Pankaj Chhabra, Head of Department of Architecture; Prof. (Dr.) Deepa Sikand, Head of Department of Education and, Dr. Gopal Kumar Johari, Head of Guru Ramdas School of Planning

In a gesture of cultural homage and gratitude, all speakers and guests were honored with flower pots and phulkari- symbols of Punjabi tradition and heartfelt respect. This ceremonial welcome was led by the Heads of the Departments of Education, Architecture, and Planning, reflecting the collaborative ethos of the university.

Prof. (Dr.) Deepa Sikand, Head of the Department of Education, delivered the formal welcome address, highlighting the spiritual and historical relevance of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s teachings. Prof. (Dr.) Karamjeet Singh, Vice Chancellor delivered the presidential remarks, commending the collaborative efforts of the departments and underscoring the importance of such seminars in imparting values of courage, compassion, and selflessness.  

Prof. (Dr.) Pankaj Chhabra formally welcomed and introduced the first speaker, Dr. Ripu Daman Singh, who spoke on “Bhai Ram Singh: A Craftsman’s Journey towards Architecture”, tracing the life and legacy of the celebrated Sikh architect whose works, including Khalsa College Amritsar, remain iconic examples of Indo-Saracenic design. 

The second speaker Dr. Manmohan Singh, was welcomed by Dr. Gopal Kumar Johari. He presented, to “Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji and his Disciples: The Great Redeemers”, reflecting on the philosophical depth of martyrdom in Sikhism and its enduring relevance as a civilizational turning point in the protection of human rights and religious freedom.  

The event concluded with remarks from Prof. (Dr.) Palwinder Singh, Dean Academic Affairs, who emphasized the timeless importance of following the path laid by the Gurus, and a formal vote of thanks by Prof. (Dr.) K. S. Chahal, Registrar of the University.  

The Expert Lecture Series, which began on 10 November and continues until 25 November 2025, which aims to deepen academic engagement with heritage, architecture, and moral philosophy. The session left the audience inspired by the spiritual heroism of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji and his disciples, reaffirming their legacy as eternal beacons of courage and righteousness.
