District administration takes major action: Raids conducted at 6 medical stores, 4 sealed

Prohibited drugs worth around Rs 9 lakh recovered from Khurana Medical Agency

Taking strict action after the recent deaths of four youths due to drug abuse in village Lakho Ke Behram, the District Administration constituted a team and conducted raids at six medical stores, out of which four were sealed after significant quantities of prohibited medicines were recovered. At a press conference held at the District Administrative Complex, Deputy Commissioner Deepshikha Sharma and SSP Bhupinder Singh Sidhu informed that after the deaths due to drugs, immediate action was taken. 

A medical team was formed, including the Senior Medical Officer, Executive Magistrate, and other officials. After interacting with the families of the deceased youths, a report was submitted, which revealed that the health of three of the deceased had already deteriorated due to drugs. One of them was also suffering from ulcers on his back. 

All these youths had repeatedly visited de-addiction centres in the past for withdrawal treatment. The fourth youth, who had obtained a withdrawal tablet from a de-addiction centre, attempted to inject it and died as a result.

The Deputy Commissioner stated that after this, another team was constituted to check medical stores in Lakho Ke Behram. The team comprised Ms. Harita Bansal, District Controlling Officer (Ferozepur); Mr. Ramandeep Gupta, District Controlling Officer (Muktsar); Mr. Parampal Singh, Naib Tehsildar Mallanwala Khas and the police team. 

Raids were conducted at Tanu Medicos, Guru Nanak 13-13 Medical Store, Sukhraj Medical Store, Satnam Medical Store, and Parmit Medical Store. Among these, prohibited drugs were found at three stores 2,950 units at Parmit Medical Store 420 units at Guru Nanak 13-13 Medical Store and more prohibited medicines at Tanu Medical Store. Consequently, all three were sealed on the spot.

In addition, the previous day, Khurana Medical Agency, Multani Gate, Ferozepur, was inspected. During the inspection, 35,200 Tapentadol tablets and 4,400 Pregabalin capsules, worth approximately  Rs 9,00,000 (nine lakh rupees), were recovered. Since the firm was not authorized to stock Tapentadol, the shop was sealed in the interest of public health, making it the fourth store to be sealed.

The Deputy Commissioner further added that under the ongoing anti-drug campaign, from January 1, 2025, to Date, 207 inspections have been conducted, during which prohibited medicines worth ₹1.32 crore were seized. Licenses of 12 medical stores were cancelled and 65 suspended. To help rescue youths from the trap of drugs, OPD facilities in de-addiction centres have been expanded as per Punjab Government’s guidelines. 

She also said that strict instructions have been given to the constituted teams to conduct continuous inspections of medical stores across the district and to take strict action under the rules wherever prohibited drugs are found. On this occasion, the SSP stated that to break the supply chain in the district, special teams were constituted, which in the recent period recovered 212 kg of Heroin 4–5 times more than the annual recovery of previous years. 

A large number of drug traffickers have also been arrested and cases registered against them. He pointed out that when the supply of narcotics is disrupted, addicts often turn to medical substitutes or other drugs, leading to deaths due to overdose. Therefore, parents must remain alert and, if they notice any changes in the habits or behaviour of their children or youths, they should immediately seek medical assistance.

He further said that the police administration, in coordination with the district administration and health department, has intensified the campaign against medical stores and drug traffickers. The SSP emphasized that strict action is being taken against anti-social elements, and no medical store or trafficker involved in drug selling will be spared.
