Odisha official transferred over girl's suicide

A senior government official in Odisha was transferred in the state after his name figured in a tribal woman's suicide note, an official said Sunday.A senior official of the state general administration department said Basudev Bahinipati, the district collector of Gajapati, will be replaced by Manasi Nimbhal, who is at present the project administrator, Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) in Mayurbhanj in Odisha."The state government transferred Bahinipati to state capital Bhubaneswar as the director of AYUSH (the Department of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy) under the health department on administrative need," the official told IANS.

Sunita Raita, 21, a nursing student, committed suicide Aug 13 at her village Diptinagar in Gajapati district, after failing to get her stipend money released from the authorities for more than a year.She had also approached the district collector two days before her death with her grievance. In her suicide note, she had named Bahinipati as being responsible for her death.Sunita's parents, who work as daily wagers, said she had joined the course with a hope that the stipend under a government scheme will meet the course fee and hostel dues.The state government announced compensation of Rs.1 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased and ordered a probe into the incident.
