Following the BJP’s defeat in Punjab’s recent by-elections, Senior National BJP Leader Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal raised sharp questions about the party’s ability to perform in the upcoming local body elections. Addressing journalists in Phillaur this morning, Grewal referred to the BJP in Punjab as “headless,” questioning its readiness to face electoral challenges.
Grewal specifically criticized the BJP High Command for its indecision regarding the resignation of Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar. “Why is the High Command maintaining silence on Jakhar’s resignation? Neither has it been accepted nor has any move been made to appoint a new state president,” he remarked.
He attributed the party's declining influence in Punjab to this lack of decisive action. “The BJP is losing ground in Punjab because of the High Command’s unwillingness to act on Jakhar’s resignation and address the concerns of the state’s people,” Grewal stated.
Expressing doubts about whether Punjab remains a priority for the central leadership, Grewal urged the BJP High Command to promptly address Jakhar’s grievances and suggestions. “Resolving these issues is essential for strengthening the party in Punjab,” he said.
Grewal also suggested that the BJP appoint an Acting President for Punjab until a final decision on Jakhar’s resignation is made. This, he said, would ensure the party is better equipped to contest and win the upcoming local body elections. The BJP leader’s remarks highlight growing concerns within the party about its organizational structure and strategy in Punjab as it faces a challenging electoral landscape.
