Village Badbar in district Barnala is the front runner in managing its water resources by converting four of its dirty ponds into Thapar models, lending five on lease for fish farming and giving a new lease of life to water resources management. Of the nine ponds in the village, three have been developed as Thapar model, grant has been issued for one and five ponds have been given on lease for fish farming.
The Member Parliament Sangrur Mr Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer today inaugurated park in the village wherein five decades old pond has been converted into a park by the government.Inaugurating the dirty pond-turned-park built at cost of Rs 66 lakhs, he said that spread in around two acres of land on Bhaini Road, the water has accumulated in form of a pond for the last 50 years in this pond.
During rains, the water body overflowed posing problems to the villagers. This pond has now been converted into a park at cost of Rs 66 lakhs that is plush with sheds, benches, walking track and a park for the villagers. Instead of fighting with the dirty water, the villagers now relax and entertainment themselves at the newly built park.
Already a pond worth Rs 36 lakhs and another at Rs 60 lakhs has been constructed. A grant of Rs 40 lakhs has been issued for modernization of third pond as Thapar model in the village.Deputy Commissioner Barnala Punamdeep Kaur said that five other ponds, covering 16 acres of land, in the village have been given on lease to the fish farmer and progressive farmer Harpal Singh for fishing purposes.
The village has population of 6842 people and a sizeable number of progressive farmers that use the water for fishing purposes and earn from it. These ponds, given on lease, are giving income to the village panchayat too.

MP Meet Hayer today also laid foundation stone of Rs 40 lakh worth modernization of vilage Karamgarh pond into Thapar model and another Rs 40 lakh developmental works in the village. He said that since ages he has been witness to the hardships of people who have been fighting against dirty water problems.
While his first term as MLA from Barnala, Meet Hayer had raised the issue in vidhan sabha, but the then government did not resolve it. The area started getting attention only after Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann took over the cudgels of state. Now almost all the villages in Barnala constituency are being given grants to convert their dirty ponds into Thapar models.
