Marvel Studios is keen to develop the Wakanda universe in the wake of the groundbreaking success of 2018's Black Panther and its 2022 follow-up. That seems to entail not just having started Black Panther 3 production already, but also a number of other Wakandan spin-offs for Disney+. Danai Gurira, who plays Okoye in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, made her first acknowledgment of her rumored Disney+ spin-off series.

Beyond Ironheart, which will have a "direct sequel" onDisney+ this year, director Ryan Coogler has been collaborating with Marvel Studios on a number of additional streaming projects for Wakanda Forever. Included in this is an unnamed Wakanda series that was just given a depressing development update.

Even yet, it's still unknown who will be in charge of these numerous storylines while they're being developed. Even if fans haven't heard anything new about the initiative that aims to investigate Danai Gurira's Dora Milaje commander Okoye's origins in a while, the celebrity gave some cautious remarks on the subject.

Okoye Teaser Release 2023

Actress Danai Gurira, who recently made an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, was asked about rumors that she will be appearing in a Black Panther spin-off series on Disney+.

Given that Gurira was informed by Marvel Studios that she might mention her possible Disney+ spin-off in passing, it would appear that the project is still active and in development.

There hasn't been any update on Marvel Studios' "origin spinoff series" for Okoye onDisney+ since May 2021, when The Hollywood Reporter originally made the announcement.Variety revealed in November 2022 that Marvel Studios is developing many Wakandan Disney+ spin-offs, coinciding with the release of Black Panther 2.

When Will Danai Gurira's Okoye Series Be Released?

While it seems that the MCU Phase 5 slate is fully booked through late 2024, the majority of the Phase 6 slate is still empty, particularly when it comes to Disney+. Granted, a number of projects that have been disclosed to be in development have been completed, but there are still a lot of unfilled positions on the official slate.

Producer Nate Moore of Marvel Studios addressed the Wakandan Disney+ spin-offs in November 2022, stating that while preparations for Black Panther 2 and Ironheart are "not as far along as people want it to be," some "great ideas" are being discussed.

Development on these spin-offs may pick up speed in the not-too-distant future, as Ryan Coogler, the director of Wakanda Forever and producer of Ironheart, now has a lot more time on his hands. It's possible that he may now prioritize creating at least one of these Disney+ projects before tackling Black Panther 3.

There is still plenty of time to include Okoye's story into the Multiverse Saga, as Phase 6 is scheduled to run directly up until May 2026's Avengers: Secret Wars. However, it's possible that it will happen later because the Wakandan commander is anticipated to remain in the MCU until Phase 7 and the upcoming story.
