Vigilance Bureau Arrests Medical Officer, Hospital Ward Attendant for Accepting Rs 10,000 Bribe

The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB), in its relentless campaign against corruption in the state, made two significant arrests on Friday during which Dr. Vikramjit Jindal, a Medical Officer at Civil Hospital Kotkapura in District Faridkot, and Gurmail Singh, a Ward Attendant at the same hospital, were apprehended for accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000.

Disclosing this here today a spokesperson of the state VB said both the accused have been arrested on a complaint filed by Harpreet Singh, a resident of Village Vandar Jatana near Kotkapura. According to the complaint, Harpreet Singh and his wife were admitted to Civil Hospital Kotkapura after sustaining injuries during an altercation with another individual. During their treatment, Dr. Vikramjit Jindal allegedly demanded Rs 5,000 to issue a medico-legal report (MLR) and provide them with improved medical care.

The following day, the doctor visited the ward to examine the complainant and informed him of a broken bone in his hand. To include this injury also in the MLR, Dr. Vikramjit Jindal demanded a bribe of Rs 20,000, which was later settled at ₹10,000. Subsequently, Gurmail Singh, the ward attendant, instructed the complainant to meet Dr. Vikramjit Jindal. During this meeting, the complainant recorded the entire conversation regarding the payment of the bribe. Armed with this evidence, the VB team took further action.

The spokesperson further added that the VB recorded the complainant's statement and laid a trap. As a result, Dr. Vikramjit Jindal and Gurmail Singh, the Ward Attendant, were arrested red-handed in the presence of two official witness while accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from the complainant. Further investigation in this case was under progress.
