Concerted Efforts and Vigilance of SAS Nagar Administration Keep Ghaggar Embankment intact at Tiwana

The concerted efforts, reinforcement and vigilance have virtually been fructifying in keeping Tiwana embankment intact, thanks to the continuous efforts being made on war footing by the administration for the past few days . 

It is helping in thwarting the impending danger of floods in low-lying villages of Tiwana, Dera, Alamgir and Khajur Mandi in Derabassi sub-division due to the increased flow of water in Ghaggar in wake of the ongoing heavy rain fall.

MLA Derabassi Kuljit Singh Randhawa, who braved the heavy rains to visit the Tiwana site, appreciated the efforts of the district administration, the drainage department and said that if this critical point was not strengthened; four villages including Ghaggar would be directly hit. It was saved due to the frequent visits made by the authorities in the last few days and the strengthening work started in time.

Principal Secretary of Water Resources Department, Krishan Kumar, who specially visited the site to take stock of the ongoing work for strengthening of the embankment today, instructed the officials present to take immediate steps meticulously to thwart any apprehension of breach under any circumstances to ensure safety of the adjoining villages 

Deputy Commissioner Ashika Jain while inspecting the Ghaggar embankment, said that the children and women of Tiwana village, have been shifted to Jashan Palace near Lalru as a precautionary measure. 

She said that due to the sharp cut of the Ghaggar here, the flow of water erode the embankment, which the entire administration has been striving hard to protect it to avoid any breach, for the past several days.

Today, the people of the village also expressed their gratitude for the rescue operations being carried out by the administration while interacting with the Deputy Commissioner Ashika Jain. ADC (Rural Development) Amit Bamby, SDM Derabassi Himanshu Gupta, Executive Engineer Drainage Rajiv Grover were also present on this occasion.

ADC (Rural Development) Amit Bamby said that due to the embankment being directly hit by the Ghaggar, there is constant monitoring on it. Executive Engineer Rajeev Grover said that though the situation is under control but for the next two or three days, monitoring will have to be maintained to ensure safety of the four adjoining villages, which are low lying than the river embankment.
