Earthquake Of 7.1 Magnitude Hits Kermadec Islands In New Zealand

It has been recently reported that an earthquake of 7.1 magnitude has hit the Kermadec Islands region located to the north of New Zealand on Thursday morning. As per the statement by US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake is estimated at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles).

It was also reported that Tsunami waves are possible for the coasts located within 300 kms of epicentre due to which tsunami alerts were issued by the US Tsunami Warning System according to a separate statement from the agency. But there are no Tsunami threats to Australia as confirmed by the Australian Department Meteorology through a tweet. 

The intensity of the Earthquake was recorded 7.1 at Richer scale but there is no devastation reported as of now. The Kermadec Islands located at the Northeast of the New Zealand capital, Wellington and New Zealand is likely to suffer more from earthquakes because it lies on the meeting point of the world's two major tectonic plates named The Pacific Plate and The Australian Plate.
