From Padmaavat To Kashmir Files Top Controversial Films Of Indian Cinema You Must Watch

If we talk about cinema, it's all about controversies, whether we talk about the actors, their personal lives or their films. It's all about the People vs Films that go to the cinema from time to time. People give reviews about everything they watch in reel life and some things end up engaging in controversies. So here is the list of top Indian cinema movies that have gone through different controversies. 

Vivek Agnihotri directorial ‘Kashmir Files’ stars Anupam Kher, Mithun Chakraborty, Darshan Kumar and Pallavi Joshi in lead roles. The story focused on the genocide of Kshmiri Pandits. This film went through a lot of controversies as it was said that the film was baised and one side has been shown while some believed that this film caused enmity between different communities.  Public opposed this film so much and protested in theatres. Also an Israeli director and Jury Chairperson, Nadav Lapid slammed the film by calling it a ‘Vulgar Propaganda’ openly during IFFI’s closing ceremony.

The South Indian historical action film ‘Kaali’ directed by Leena Manimekalai faced a lot of controversies when its poster was out. The poster portrayed the Hindu goddess Kaali smoking and a rainbow flag of LGBTQ community is seen with her. People filed complaints against her for hurting the sentiments of the religion and demanded to withdraw the poster and ban the film. People also demanded the arrest of the filmmaker and started hashtag trend on twitter saying hashtag “arrest Leena manimekalai” 

The blockbuster movie of 2023 ‘Pathaan’ directed by Siddharth Anand and stars Shahrukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, and John Abraham in lead roles went through a lot of ups and downs before its release. The people objected to the song Besharam Rang because of Deepika’s saffron coloured bikini outfit that she wore during the song because the saffron colour is considered to be sacred in Hinduism so it hurt the religious sentiments. Also they demanded to change the title of the movie as ‘Pathaan’ is a Muslim name with the cut of the song.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmaavat’ featuring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor in lead roles went through a lot of controversies and protests. The Rajput community alleged the makers of including an intimate dream scene of their Hindu queen (Rani Padmavati) with the Muslim King which portrayed their queen in bad light. Sanjay Leela Bhansali was even assaulted at the set by some members of  the Rajput Community. Later the film was banned in four states and the name was changed from Padmavati to Padmaavat. 

The sci-fi comedy drama film PK directed by Rajkumar Hirani was released in 2014. Initially the film went under the controversies when the poster of the film was released which showed Aamir Khan almost nude protecting his modesty with a transistor. And, the film was criticised for hurting the religious sentiments of various religious groups. It questioned the superstitions of the people of the country where religion is deeply rooted in minds and hearts of the people from ancient times. The movie stars Aamir Khan, Anushka Sharma, Sushant Singh Rajput, Bomen Irani, Sanjay Dutt in lead roles.

Ayan Mukherjee directorial ‘Brahmastra’ went through the hashtag beef-boycott- brahmastra trend due to Ranbir’s statement in which he said that he loves beef because in a country like India where cows are worshipped, it's disrespectful to do so. People even object to a scene shown in the trailer in which Ranbir was entering a temple with footwears. Bajrang Dal even organised a protest and stopped Ranbir and Alia from offering their prayers at Mahakaleshwar temple in Ujjain.

These are some top films which went through controversies but have received a lot of love from audiences and have been superhit after their release.
