Indian Space Research Organisation has released a recent picture in which the landmark Joshimath’s ridge is gradually showing land subsidence. But to know about the news, first know about the area and the matter. Joshimath is an area which is located in Uttrakhand, district of Chamoli, India. It is located at a height of 6150 feet (1875 m), it is supposed to be a gateway to various Himalayan peak climbing travels, trekking routes, and pilgrim centres like Badrinath.
It is a cottage to one of the four cardinal pīthas inducted by Adi Shankara. The area was severely affected by the 2021 Uttarakhand flood and its aftermath, on 7 February 2021. The town is guaranteed to be sinking due to its geographic location being along a running ridge. Structures around the town originated cracks and town people had to be evacuated.

ISRO has launched a picture of the area in which the sinking part of the Joshimath has been seen. ISRO National Remote Sensing Centre released satellite images showing a significant increase in the rate of land subsidence in Joshimath over the past 10-12 days, up to 5.4 cm, in comparison to a 'slow subsidence' of 9 cm in seven months (Apr-Nov 2022).

The area is marked under the sensitive zone. These areas include the entire town, images, the Army helipad, and Narasimha temple; these are the locations that are shared in the images. Based on ISRO`s preliminary report, the Uttarakhand government is conducting rescue operations in danger-prone areas and the people in these areas are being shifted to safer places on priority. Because the ridge involved various cracks, or to safeguard the lives of the local people, the area will be evacuated as soon as the confirmation of the area’s sinking.
