As in Bollywood, Punjabi cinema is also facing a lot of backlash and flop films. Yes, this might be a sour article for many people, but it is important to give a reality check. Sadly, there are many films which seem to do good at box office but shut off within a week. When digging into this issue, there are many problems which have been discovered, but here we will only talk about five major reasons behind the decline of Punjabi films and cinema.
Repeated Genre
Though Punjabi cinema is mainly known for the comic genre, these days, the audience are very smart and expect something out of the box. They not only want to stick to one genre but wish to see new and unusual concepts every time. The filmmakers are required to work on better quality. As they are trying to experiment with action, romance, emotions but unknowingly creating chaos while mixing all this.
So, one of the major reasons for decline of Punjabi cinema is the repeated genre.
OTT Effect
After Covid-19, many cinemas, workplaces, schools and other public gathering places were closed. And due to that the thing which was affected badly was cinema. People were at home watching films and series on digital platforms. And this habit becomes the comforting zone for all the moviegoers. They either wait for the film to release on OTT, or prefer films that release on the same screen first.

More Clashes
After the Covid-19 breakdown, the shooting was shut down. So, now the makers are creating back to back films and announcing a day after another. This bulk release in films is creating clashes. And as we all know the viewers are very smart these days and know what to watch. They are intelligent enough to segregate better films through teaser, trailer or choice of actors in the movie.
The clashes of the movies are decreasing the business of producers as well.
Smart Audience
As earlier revealed that the audience is brilliant enough to choose the competent film by analyzing the director, writer, actors, and most importantly the genre of the film. Not only this, viewers also examine that if the particular actor or actress is suited for the same genre then only they went to watch the films. So, these days the market is full of films which is giving fans a major option to choose the better quality of film.
Unaffordable Cinema
After the origin of OTT, viewers see that the cinema tickets are a little expensive. They find Amazon Prime, Netflix, Sony Liv and other OTT platforms cheaper. It has been seen that tickets price at nearly Rs 350-400 in India. This, according to critics, is very high for an average consumer in India. On top of that, the prices of food and beverages are also very high.
So, obviously during this increase in inflation, audiences find OTT platforms better.
Hence, these are major causes due to which we see a decrease in the hit numbers of Punjabi films. If producers and makers will work on these issues then we might think of a better option and shift our interest towards silver screens.
