Agriculture Ministry will review all existing schemes in the fisheries sector to ensure that these meet the requirements of fishermen and fish farmers and seek to address their concerns. This was announced by Agriculture Minister, Radha Mohan Singh, here today while meeting a delegation of fishermen representatives from different states of the country. The Fishermen representatives presented a copy of National Policy on Fishing and Fishermen documented by the Bharatiya Janata Party.

During the discussion, the Minister was apprised of the problems being faced by fishermen who are jailed and whose boats are confiscated by the authorities of neighbouring nations. It was told that the existing schemes meant to help such fishermen need to be fully implemented. Similarly, many fishermen are not able to avail of the benefits of schemes during the fishing ban period. The fishermen also requested that the diesel subsidy may be revived for the fishing boats. Coastal fishermen representatives mentioned that the destructive fishing methods and gear should be controlled and utilization of solar technology for the boats may also be looked into. Shri Radha Mohan Singh directed the concerned officials to discuss in detail all issues pertaining to fishermen with their representatives and find short and long term solutions to these issues.
