Who is Navjit Kaur Brar, First Turban Wearing Sikh Woman Elected As City Councillor

In Brampton elections, Navjit Kaur Brar has been appointed as city councillor by defeating former Conservative MP candidate Jermaine Chambers

A great piece of news has made the headlines. According to reports, the turban-wearing Sikh woman was elected as a Brampton City Councillor in the most recent municipal council elections. It is none other than Indo-Canadian healthcare worker Navjit Kaur Brar. She becomes the first Sikh wearing a turban to be selected as Councillor. 

Brar, who is a respiratory therapist, was born and raised in Brampton. Brar provided front-line medical assistance during the pandemic. She has occasionally volunteered for public service. Despite having minimal prior political experience, she defeated former Conservative MP candidate for Brampton West Jermaine Chambers in the contest for City Councillor in Wards 2 and 6.

The mother of three secured 28.85% of the votes cast. In all, over 40,000 doors were knocked on and over 22,500 people were spoken to as part of her campaign in the past two months.

By just 227 votes, another Sikh candidate, Gurpartap Singh Toor, defeated Gurpreet Dhillon in Wards 9 and 10.

Who is Navjit Kaur Brar?

Navjit Kaur Brar is a mother of three children, including a boy and two daughters. Her birthday is May 20, 1986. Her life began in the city of Brampton, where she was also raised. Her parents travelled to Canada from Punjab in the 1980s. After receiving a BSc in science from the University of Toronto, Brar enrolled at Canadore College in North Bay, Ontario, where she obtained an RT diploma.

When she accepted a position as a respiratory therapist at Lincare Inc. in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Navjit Kaur Brar started her career in medicine. When she started working at Brampton Civic Hospital in 2013, she became a part of the William Osler Health System.

She defeated Jermaine Chambers, the former Conservative MP candidate for Brampton West, in the Ward 2 and Ward 6 elections. The goal of Navjit's strategy for the city of Brampton is to enhance services and meet citizens' needs.
