CWG 2022: Sanket Sargar Won Silver Medal in Weightlifting, Know About The Medal Opener of India

Sanket Sargar, who is a weightlifter in the Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Birmingham on Saturday has opened India’s account. Sargar has won a silver medal in the men’s 55 kg category. The 21-year-old Sargar lifted a total of 248kg (113 snatches, 135 clean & jerk) to secure the medal. Aniq Kasdan of Malaysia received the gold with a total lift of 249 kg (107 kg snatch, 142 kg clean & jerk), while the bronze went to Sri Lanka’s Dilanka Yodage (225 kg).

Moreover, before the start of the Commonwealth Games Sanket said, "If I can win gold, I am sure recognition will come my way. It is my dream to be able to support my father and show him my gratitude for all that he has done for me."

Who is Sanket Sargar?

In 2013, Sanket, whose father is a farmer and had a Paan shop, started weightlifting. His sister is also a weightlifter, proving that his family has a passion for the sport. Sanket Mahadev Sargar, a student of Shivaji University, Kolhapur, is a three-time national champion from Sangli, Maharashtra. Sargar, who was competing for the gold medal by lifting 143 kg, took second place for India.

From the reports, it has also been noted that the young gun from India was successful in all three of his attempts to lift - 107, 111 and 113 kg. Meanwhile, the Indian weightlifter met expectations by doing some cool, collected lifts in the men's 55kg snatch and clean and jerk divisions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulate the weightlifter and took his Twitter and express his joy. While sharing Sanket Sargar’s picture, PM Modi wrote, “Exceptional effort by Sanket Sargar! His bagging the prestigious Silver is a great start for India at the Commonwealth Games. Congratulations to him and best wishes for all future endeavours.”

Now a Commonwealth Games winner, Sargar is committed to stopping his father from working as hard as he has to support his family. The young man, who has built a name for himself on the international stage, will be eager to qualify for the Olympics in Paris and build upon his recent recognition as one of the greatest weightlifters in the nation.
