Cornering Akali Dal and Congress over Chandigarh issue, Chief Spokesperson of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Malwinder Singh Kang on Tuesday said that both the parties never raised the issue of Chandigarh capital before the Centre government while remaining in power and now instead of solving, they are doing cheap politics over this vital issue. 

Addressing the media at the party headquarters here, Kang accompanied by AAP leaders Dr Sunny Singh Ahluwalia and Jagtar Singh Sanghera in the press conference said that the SAD-BJP and Congress governments never advocated for the rights of Punjab even though Akali Dal ruled Punjab for about 20 years and Congress for 28 years. 

Now for the past few days, the opposition is raking up the issue of Chandigarh just to score brownie points before the public by issuing scurrilous statements against AAP.Kang squarely said that Chandigarh belongs to Punjab and always will be. The city was built on the land of Punjab to make it the capital of Punjab. AAP will not let Punjab's authority over Chandigarh get dilute at any cost. 

Questioning the opposition for levelling baseless allegations against the AAP and Chief Minister Bhagwant, Kang said, why did the Badal and Congress governments shift the government offices of Punjab from Chandigarh to Mohali? Why New Chandigarh was established during the Badal government? The authority of Punjab over Chandigarh was weakened by the previous governments. 

Lambasting the Badal family, he said that to please the BJP government at the Centre, Badals themselves bought all the land near Chandigarh and later sold it at a higher price. They, for their vested interests, weakened the authority of Punjab over Chandigarh and also played with the sentiments of the people.
