Two persons were killed and 54 others were injured, four of them critically, after a bus ferrying wedding guests veered off a mountainous road and fell into a deep gorge at Majouri Ramnagar area in Udhampur district on Wednesday.

Officials told GNS said that the bus was carrying guests from Gundia village of Ramnagar and soon after the accident, a large-scale rescue operation was launched by police, officials from civil administration and locals. 

They said 56 persons were taken to Sub District Hospital Ramnagar for immediate medical attention. However two of them were declared as brought dead on arrival. They have been identified as Shambu Kumar (32) son of Munishi Ram of Bassi Mantra and Premu (55) son of Lissu of Gundhian.  

 Among the injured persons, four critically patients were shifted to GMC Jammu and 15 to District Hospital Udhampur and the rest are undergoing treatment at SDH Ramnagar, they further said.

SHO Ramnagar, Pushminder Singh, who led a police party to the site, confirmed the death of two persons in the accident.  Earlier, officials said that a bus carrying a marriage party met with an accident in Majouri of Ramnagar area in Udhampur district.

Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha has expressed deep pain over the loss of lives in the accident and announced ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each for the Next of Kin of those who lost their lives in the tragic bus accident in Udhampur.

The injured will be given Rs. 50,000 each and the UT Government will bear the cost of their treatment.. expressed grief over the unfortunate incident and directed the district administration to ensure the best possible treatment to the injured.

“Extremely pained by the loss of lives due to a tragic road accident in Ramnagar, Udhampur. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for speedy recovery of injured”, the Lt Governor said.
