Navjot Sidhu sentenced to 1 year in jail by SC

Former Punjab Congress chief Najot Sidhu, sentenced by SC in the 34-year-old road-rage case, is said to be another massive setback after his defeat in Punjab elections a month ago. The review petition was filed by the son of the victim who had allegedly died after a physical assault by Sidhu and others. 

It seems that the troubles are increasing day by day for former Punjab Congress President and former cricketer turned comedian judge Navjot Singh Sidhiu. First he had to lose the post of Punjab Congress President and now Sidhu has got a big setback in the road rage case of 1988. Navjot Singh Sidhu got relief in this case from the first court. But the family of the person who died in road rage filed a review petition, hearing on which today i.e. on Thursday, the Supreme Court has sentenced Sidhu to one year rigorous imprisonment. Review of orders of 2018- 

For your information, let us tell you that the Supreme Court has reviewed its May 2018 order acquitting Navjot Singh Sidhu. According to the order, Sidhu will be taken into custody by the Punjab Police. Now Sidhu has been given maximum possible punishment under section 323 of IPC. Sidhu is presently present in Patiala. This morning itself, he had demonstrated on an elephant against the central government on the issue of inflation. 

The victim's family had filed a review petition

The road rage case against Sidhu dates back to the year 1988. Sidhu got into a fight with a 65-year-old man named Gurnam Singh over parking in Patiala. It was not just a quarrel of Bahbhasai, it is alleged that Sidhu punched Gurnam Singh. Later Gurnam Singh died. In the postmortem report also, the cause of death was said to be a blow to the head. After this, the police registered a case of culpable homicide against Navjot Singh Sidhu and his friend Rupinder Singh Sidhu. Earlier in this case, the Supreme Court had released Sidhu by imposing a fine of Rs. But the family members of the elderly were not happy with this decision. He filed a review petition in the Supreme Court. After which the decision has come on this today i.e. on Thursday.

The Sessions Court had acquitted- 

Thereafter the matter reached the court. During the hearing, the sessions court had acquitted Navjot Singh Sidhu in 1999 citing lack of evidence. After this, the aggrieved party reached the High Court against the decision of the Sessions Court. In the year 2006, the High Court sentenced Navjot Singh Sidhu to three years imprisonment and a fine of one lakh rupees in this case. But after that the matter reached the Supreme Court.

Navjot Singh Sidhu has been a great cricketer. He has served in Indian cricket for a long time. Sidhu is known as a dashing opener. After retiring from cricket, Sidhu joined politics and changed party first to BJP and then to Congress. He did many TV shows and earned a lot of name even after leaving cricket. Sidhu also made a lot of headlines with his special skill in commentary for a long time. Overall, Sidhu's journey has been very good. But there were some bad times in life where people criticised him a lot. Sidhu's friendship with the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, was discussed all over the world.
