Shiromani Akali Dal President S. Sukhbir Singh Badal today expressed serious concern over the looming threat of pink bollworm sweeping across cotton crop and bemoaned the lacklustre and sluggish response of the Punjab govt so far.“It’s a serious threat and if allowed to grow, it will devastate the cotton farmers in the state."He said that experts including those from the Punjab Agriculture University should immediately rush to the affected areas and help the farmers with the necessary know-how to contain the menace.Mr Badal also wanted the Deputy Commissioners to prepare for early assessment of losses suffered or likely to be suffered by the farmers and said that the govt should immediately announce full compensation to the affected cotton growers. Earlier, Mr Badal accompanied by Ms Harsimrat Kaur Badal called upon the senior Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia in Patiala jail.“Mr Majithia is in Chardi Kala.

The entire party and all right thinking people cutting across party lines stand solidly behind him as he has been booked in a false case directly by a tainted DGP circumventing all established norms and laws of the country. The case was registered under orders from CM Charanjit Channi and home minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and was a clear example of political vendetta against SAD. But Mr Majithia is totally innocent and we have full faith in judiciary in everything,” said Mr Badal.Former Deputy CM asked the Govt of India to further expedite its rescue operations to save every Indian student and other citizens of the country trapped in Ukraine .Mr Badal regretted the state government was in a sleep mode over the matter and  is showing no interest in saving the hapless Punjabi students stranded in Ukraine.“Congress and AAP leaders and ministers who miss no opportunity to speak on any inane issue have gone into a hiding when Punjabi students in Ukraine are facing extreme crisis," said Mr Badal.

The SAD president asked the state Chief Secretary to immediately dispatch some senior officers to the troubled spots and coordinate with the government of India officials and ministers to help in rescuing our children who are braving great odds there. He also asked for a round-the-clock helpline to be immediately set up to assist the affected families  of those trapped in Ukraine. These families must be given moral and material support. The Akali president said that his party rejects the clarification given by the Government of India on its “utterly disastrous decision on Bhakhra Beas Management Board (BBMB)".Mr Badal reiterated SAD's total commitment to a genuinely federal structure in the country and said that the SAD-BSP govt will force the Govt of India to ensure “total fiscal autonomy to states whose powers have been usurped by the centre over the years."About the poll prospects of Shiromani Akali Dal-Bahujan Samaj Party, the party president said that the alliance was set to win by a thumping margin and will prove fake surveys and forecasts wrong and comfortably form the govt."People of Punjab have voted for the development and they believed in our track record," said Sukhbir Singh Badal, adding that there would be no need for a tie up with any other party as SAD-BSP will romp home with a comfortable majority.
