Punjab To Launch Campaign To Clean Sewerage System Of All Cities

Local Bodies Department Asked To Work Out The Plan

The Punjab Government would soon launch a campaign to clean sewerage system of all cities and de-clog for optimum utilization. Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Sukhbir Singh Badal today gave these directions while reviewing the development works of all cities in a high level meeting here today. He said that age old sewerage system in the cities was facing the frequent problem of clogging and overflow, creating unsanitary conditions in various localities. He said that Local Government Department should work out a statewide comprehensive plan to de-clog the sewerage system in one go and handover its operation and maintenance to a private company. He said that department should identify the scientific machinery for mapping the sewerage network, vacuum suction pumps to clean the system without involving the manual cleaning and float a tender for this whole cleaning operation. 

Asking the department to ensure metered potable water supply to every inhabited unit in all 142 cities, Mr. Badal said that it was the primary duty of Local Bodied Department to provide clean potable water to every citizen of the state. He asked the department to work out a plan to provide legal sewerage connection to every house in the cities as under utilization of sewerage network was creating more problems. Mr. Badal asked the department to work out a centralized payment system and collection of bills through online process. It was decided in the meeting that every upcoming colony or locality would have sewerage and water supply system as a part of plan. 

Prominent amongst those present in the meeting including Mr. P.S. Aujla, Principal Secretary to Deputy CM,  Ashok Gupta, Secretary Local Government,  Mr. Manvesh Singh Sidhu and Mr. Ajay Mahajan, both Special Principal Secretaries to Deputy CM and Deputy Commissioners of various districts.
